Tens of thousands of you in Ontario helped get our leader Elizabeth May into the federal debates in 2008. While less successful this year, we still made history on May 2nd with her election to the House of Commons. For your efforts to fight for democratic leaders debates during the past two elections, I thank you.
Yesterday, I learned that the Ontario leaders’ debate will be held on September 27th, but will not include the Green Party leader. The voices of over 354,000 voters who voted Green in the 2007 election have been silenced by the Broadcast consortium. Once again, we are confronted with a highly undemocratic decision! This is in contrast with the broadcasters in British Columbia, New Brunswick and Prince Edwards Island who included their provincial Green Party.
The Green Party of Ontario, long established in provincial politics, was first to present its election platform on May 24th, has run a full slate of candidates in 2007 (they were one shy of doing so in 2003), and is prepared to do that again on October 6th. Ontarians deserve to hear their leader, Mike Schreiner, debating with the other three provincial party leaders.
I am asking you to take a few moments out of your long weekend to help let Mike speak in the Leader’s Debate. Here’s how:
- Sign the petition at letmikespeak.ca;
- Ask five (or more!) friends sign the petition;
- ‘Like’ their Facebook page - http://www.facebook.com/LetMikeSpeak; and
- Follow #LetMikeSpeak on Twitter.
Thank you in advance for raising democracy’s voice. Together, we can strengthen our democracy in Canada and in Ontario.

Johan Hamels
Executive Director, Green Party of Canada
