Dear Supporter:
The Green Party has consistently stood side-by-side with the local community in Dufferin County, fighting against a proposed mega-quarry for some time. This project, if it sees the light of day, will be the largest quarry in all of Ontario, chiming in at about 1/3 the size of Toronto and deeper than the gorge at Niagara Falls.
This hole in the ground will destroy thousands of hectares of prime farmland in the Niagara escarpment and disrupt 600,000,000 liters of water each day. In stark contrast, a major residential development uses 0.001% of that amount. This is equal to 25% of the entire province’s daily water use!
This sort of disregard for the public good is absolutely unacceptable. On several occasions, we asked you to help us and the local community stop the mega-quarry by writing to the Liberal Minister of Environment, demanding an environmental assessment.
Yesterday, after thousands of letters denouncing this ill-conceived project, the Liberal government finally relented, and ordered a full environmental assessment. This is finally a step in the right direction, with several battles yet to come.
Through the causes we have championed, such as opposing the construction of a gas powered peaker plant on pristine environmental wetlands, the proposed mega-quarry, unfairly changing the microFIT rules, or the unaffordable expansion of the Darlington nuclear power plants, we have shown our commitment to working with citizens and speaking out for clean water, healthy food and a strong local economy.
To make a lasting impact and secure our vision for our children and grandchildren, we need our voice to be heard at Queen’s Park by electing our first Green MPPs on October 6th. Never has the Green Party message been more relevant to Ontarians than it is today, and we need our politicians at Queen’s Park to catch up. We need Green MPPs in the Legislature!
There is a week before the start of the provincial election. If you have not already done so, show your pre-campaign support of our vision of a better Ontario by:
- Requesting a lawn sign;
- Volunteering with your local campaign;
- Signing the petition to get Mike Schreiner into the leaders’ debate; and
- Making a pre-election financial contribution.
Thank you for everything you are doing for the Green Party as we head into our most important election campaign to date
Sincerely,

Craig Cantin
Deputy Executive Director
Green Party of Ontario
