We made history on May 2nd, permanently changing the Canadian political landscape. The election of Elizabeth May as our first Green MP is an accomplishment all Greens can be proud of. We have proven that it is very possible to win seats within our current electoral system, just as Caroline Lucas in the UK and Adam Bandt in Australia have done.
For years, Greens have made an impact in politics by advancing policies other political parties have poached and borrowed. We’ve succeeded in pushing sustainability – environmental, social and financial – onto the agenda. Canadians are ready for a breath of fresh air from our politicians, and our efforts have resulted in a well-deserved seat in Parliament.
The Green Party of Ontario is eager to build on this historic moment. With the federal election behind us, we now look towards our provincial election less than five months away. There is clearly a strong desire for a fresh, new approach to politics. Ontarians want more local democracy and fewer political insiders; the old parties have had their chance. It’s time to move beyond the cynicism and hyper-partisanship, and embrace a positive, sustainable future.
We’ve had many successes in our organization. Together, we have consistently exceeded our fundraising targets, have placed 3rd in 2 of 5 by-elections, we’re expanding our organizational capacity and our membership continues to grow. We’re excited about the possibilities ahead and inspired by our first elected Green MP!
As an organization with increasing momentum, we hope that you will consider renewing your membership. Membership is an important building block in our path to Election Day. Together, we can elect the first Green MPP to Queen’s Park. We plan to run our biggest, most ambitious campaign ever, proving to voters across Ontario that we are the only political party that represents real change.
