For a political party, electoral success is an important component of its raison d’être. The Green Party of Ontario has had many recent achievements: together, we have consistently exceeded our fundraising targets, have placed third in two of five by-elections, we’re expanding our organizational capacity, and our membership continues to grow. We’re excited about the possibilities ahead and inspired by the recent election of Elizabeth May as our first Green MP!
Much more will be accomplished once we have representation at Queen’s Park after our October 6th election, both politically and in advancing issues that are important to Ontarians. However, we can go even further beyond preparing for the upcoming election, and show the public what we can achieve now. If creating a sustainable future for our children and grandchildren is truly important to us, then what we do before and after we win seats is invaluable.
Last year, we launched a new annual campaign, the Forest of Hope, in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. The premise is simple: a portion of your financial contribution made through this campaign will go towards planting trees. To this end, we have partnered with a local community organization, Further Advancement In Tree Habitats – www.faithproject.ca. In its second year, it has a 2011 goal of planting a 400-strong sustainable tree habitat that will have a healthy and lasting effect on both the environment and the people living in the Durham Region.
